A huge thank you to Conor from Techiquest & STEM learning for our Polar Explorer Experience. Young Voices afternoon warm up , by Mrs Brown

Date: 27th Jan 2018 @ 10:34pm

Huge thanks to the Young Voices Foundation for providing a grant towards our transport costs, tickets for parents,  T -shirts, torches and wrist bands this year.  The Young Voices experience certainly touched many of us this year and it was fantastic to see the motivational and inspirational effect it has had on our pupils, parents and staff who have been a part of the whole experience.

Throughout this school year the children have practised wholeheartedly at lunch times and have been an absolute pleasuree to work with, they certainly do make Westwood proud.  It has been amazing watching so many youngsters commiting themselves to  music and song with such passion.

Once we arrive at Manchester on the day of the concert , Westwood's Young Voices went straight into practise mode with the professionals.  It was  great fun watching how the Urban Strides Dancers, the  internationally acclaimed conductor David Lawrence, Soul singer  Natalie Williams and 16 year old Alfie Sheard prepared for the evening performance. So much fun!

Enjoy the pictures and don't forget to scroll down and check out the videos too.

Geography is so cool!, by Mrs Brown

Date: 31st Oct 2017 @ 3:31pm

Developing our map reading skills in Year 5 and 6 using a range of Atlas.

An Atlas is such a brilliant tool for developing children's skills in geography.  If you are looking for a Christmas stocking filler then look no further for ideas for santa.  Every child should own one to help them to understand the world they live in.

Victorian Britain - Bringing learning to life Class 7, 8 and 9, by Mrs Brown

Date: 11th Oct 2017 @ 10:58pm

BRINGING LEARNING TO LIFE - VICTORIAN BRITAIN THROUGH THE KEYHOLE

In History, the children in classes 7, 8 and 9 have been expanding their knowledge of the Victorian era through lots of real life experiences and research tasks.

What was a Victorian classroom like?

During our Victorian day, there were maps and  pictures on the wall, globes for geography and a large, well used bible that the children read from. Children sat in rows,  the very strict teacher stood at the front facing the class to remind them that 'children should be seen and not heard!' Hands and nails were inspected as the children were also reminded that Victorian teachers would drill their children on a daily basis to make them believe that 'cleanliness is next to Godliness'.

Children wrote on slates with chalk. They wiped the slate clean, by spitting on it and rubbing with their coat sleeve or their finger (... just kidding, but that is how they would have cleaned them if they really were in a Victorian classroom!).   The children learnt that slates could be used over and over. For writing on paper, children used a pen with a metal nib, dipped into an  ink well,  all a bit messy, but great fun and brilliant handwriting practice. For those who needed extra practice, a wax board was used with a sharp, wooden tool which enabled greater control whilst working to strengthen hand muscles.

The children sang 'All things bright and beautiful' and later learnt all about the story of creation. Before the day had ended, the children presented to their peers and we were astounded by their performances...all in a good days work and in true Victorian style.

Enjoy our photos.

Victorian Days in Year 5 & 6, by Mrs Williams

Date: 7th Sep 2017 @ 10:43pm

As soon as we came in on Tuesday, the curriculum kicked with a time travelling experience into the Life and times of Queen Victoria!

The children experienced life as a Victorian child in the School, How the Victorians enterained themselves with craft and needlework. They explored the inventions of the age and a look at life in the Victorian Home. They even fit in a little bit of research on a Victorian area of interest!!

They have had a great start so far... enjoy the pictures!!

Tribute to Fred Birks, by Mrs Williams

Date: 22nd Aug 2017 @ 9:23pm

Tribute to Fred Birks

Today we received some amazing photos and news that we wanted to share with you!

Mrs Noreen Jones and her Husband Bryn are currently on holiday in Belgium. Whilst there, they took time to visit Fred Birks' final resting place. They laid a floral tribute to Fred from all of the Staff, Pupils and Parents of Westwood, along with a message from us all!

Mrs Jones said it was a very moving experience. You will see from the photographs that Fred's grave is one of many; over one thousand soldiers, service men and women are laid to rest in the burial ground in Zillebeke. The flowers in Westwood purple look striking and poinient against Fred's grave stone.

We will send this tribute to Fred's family as they too will be visiting the grave in September, to mark the 100 year anniversary of Fred's death.

Thank you Mr & Mrs Jones ... you've done Westwood and Fred Birks proud!
